Titanium Dioxide Production Surges

2021-04-19

Since the beginning of this year, the titanium dioxide industry in China has continued its upward trend last year, and companies generally maintain a high level of profitability. However, a good market situation can hardly conceal the hidden dangers of overcapacity and product homogeneity. At present, the export of titanium dioxide is restricted by the state's cancellation of export tax rebates for "two high and one capital" products, and international giants such as DuPont and Coscom are rushing to compete in China, making some domestic companies feel crisis. At the second China Titanium Dioxide Production and Application Forum held in Longkou, Shandong, from October 9th to 11th, industry experts pointed out that structural adjustment and industrial upgrading have become the only choice for the titanium dioxide industry.
The domestic market continues to be optimistic about the good reasons for this year's titanium dioxide market. Bi Sheng, the Titanium Divider Center of the Productivity Promotion Center of the Chemical Industry Industry, gave three major influencing factors:
First, demand increased and output increased. Since the beginning of this year, with the further development of coatings, plastics, real estate, automobiles, transportation and other industries closely related to titanium dioxide, the titanium dioxide market has continued to operate at a high level. In the first three quarters, titanium dioxide enterprises showed a trend of both production and sales. The average operating rate of 16 enterprises with full-process rutile product production capacity, 9 rutile powder products companies, and 3 professional surface treatment enterprises reached the average 70% to 80%, some even higher. Due to the partial production capacity shifting to the rutile type, the Antarctic-type products are in short supply, and the operating rate of enterprises is maintained at over 90%. In the first three quarters, the total domestic production of titanium dioxide reached 900,000 tons to 950,000 tons, a record high in recent years.
Second, the price of raw materials is stable, and the level of corporate profits has increased. In the first three quarters of this year, the price of sulfuric acid, which is one of the main raw materials of titanium dioxide, was generally at a low level. Although there was fluctuation in a short period of time, the price was not significant. The average price was 300 to 400 yuan/ton. With little change in production costs and a slight rise in energy costs, titanium dioxide production companies have strengthened their management of production processes and reduced their overall operating costs, all of which have achieved good economic benefits.
Third, both import and export have set new records. In the first three quarters, China's cumulative import of titanium dioxide was approximately 180,000 tons, an increase of 1.6% year-on-year. During the same period, the country exported 120,000 tons of titanium dioxide, an increase of 85.4% year-on-year. In the first half of this year, the export volume of titanium dioxide was equivalent to 92.4% in 2009. It is predicted that the total export of titanium dioxide in China this year is expected to exceed 200,000 tons.
International market supply and demand Bi Shengsheng said that because in the past 10 years, in addition to other regions outside China, no large-scale titanium dioxide plant, and the United States of all sulfuric acid companies, some of the European enterprises of sulfuric acid and the United States and Europe in several oxidation titanium White companies have been shut down. During this period, although some manufacturers expanded their capacity, due to the gradual recovery of economic conditions in Western developed countries, market demand has improved significantly, resulting in tight supply of titanium dioxide and rising prices.
Judging from the situation in the first three quarters of this year, the international market for titanium dioxide has been prosperous. Globally, major titanium dioxide producers have continuously raised their prices, and the cumulative price increases have ranged from 350 to 450 US dollars per ton. Even so, the market supply is still tight, which is also the fundamental reason for the large number of Chinese titanium dioxide exports in the same period. It is expected that this tight supply and demand situation will continue in the fourth quarter.
Sudden prospects for sharp increase in production capacity At this forum, many representatives of the industry expressed concern about the expansion of energy in some enterprises, arguing that this would exacerbate excessive competition in the titanium dioxide industry. It is understood that as a large number of new construction and expansion projects are launched, it is expected that the total domestic titanium dioxide production capacity will increase to 2.2 million tons by the end of this year, an increase of 46.7% year-on-year, and the market competition will become increasingly fierce.
Bi Sheng analysis believes that the entry threshold is too low or a major cause of excess production capacity. Factors such as the expansion of the original enterprises and the joining of companies outside the industry have made the situation of disorderly production expansion more serious in recent years, and the new titanium dioxide projects can be described as blooming. Excluding the DuPont Dongying chlorination project that has not yet been identified, up to 25 titanium white projects have been completed, under construction, proposed, and planned. Among them, nine production expansion projects were put into production in 2010, and the new production capacity was 470,000 tons, all of which were rutile products. There were five projects that industrial companies joined titanium dioxide and put into production, involving a production capacity of 285,000 tons; the future 5 During the year, there were as many as 11 expansions or new projects, involving a capacity of over 1.04 million tons.
Among the above 25 projects, there are three chlorination processes and the rest are sulfuric acid processes. In 2009, the total production capacity of titanium dioxide in China was 1.5 million tons. In 2010, it increased steeply to more than 2.2 million tons. By 2015, it may exceed 3.3 million tons. At that time, the market competition will become more intense and the industry prospects will be worrisome.
This reporter learned that in order to cope with the crisis and promote industrial upgrading, the domestic titanium dioxide industry has started to move. In 2009, the output of domestic rutile products reached 555,000 tons, exceeding that of anatase products for the first time; the industrialization of titanium dioxide in the chlorination process continued to make progress, and the annual production of 300,000 tons of projects by Pangang Group was started in June this year. Jinzhou Titanium Industry The chlorination process titanium dioxide projects, such as capacity expansion projects and the Yunnan Xinli New Construction Project, are also being stepped up. At the same time, the pace of restructuring in the industry is also accelerating. The reorganization of Jiangsu Jinpu Nuclear China Huayuan, Hunan Wynn Holdings China Nuclear 272 titanium dioxide, Panzhihua Iron and Steel Group Holdings Jiangsu Zhenti, etc., have aroused widespread concern in the industry.

Titanium Dioxide is white powder, non-toxic, chemically inative, surface treated with aluminum compounds.

The products show good whiteness, high gloss, great hiding power, strong tinting power, favorable weatherability, high chalk resistance, low oil absorption, good wetting and are easy to disperse in a variety of systems.

1)In paint industry, It is used as white pigment and glaze of porcelain.

2)It can also be used as coating and filling in paper-making industry to help paper to be printable and opaque.

3)In metallurgical industry, it can be used to make spongy titanium, alloy of titanium and iron and hard alloy, etc.
